Norman Lindsay was fascinated by the world of Greek mythology and his home and grounds at Faulconbridge are filled with statues of satyrs, sirens and sphinxes. The original Greek Sphinx derived from the Oedipus legend. This half-woman, half-lion guarded the road to Thebes and ate travellers unable to answer her riddles. Lindsay created a large cement sphinx statue in the grounds of the property in 1943 to guard the steps to the pool and subsequently became the symbol for the property.
